Introduction:
Located in Corner Brook, the Loretta Bartlett Home for Youth is a gender diverse six bed facility for youth sentenced to a period of Open Custody or an Order to Reside. Youth are provided a supportive, non-institutional environment and are encouraged to access educational programs, psychological, medical and other professional services that are available within the community. Staff at our facility provides guidance and support in helping our young people become independent and responsible individuals. It is our goal that youth under our care will acquire the skills to enable them to become productive members within the community and be successful in future endeavors. This is accomplished in part through education, employment, volunteer work, job skills programs and life and social skills training.
Summary:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Coordinator is responsible for the leadership, development and management of the staff and the supervision of youth in a residential environment. The coordinator works closely with the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development along with other various professional youth serving agencies to support the youth.
Responsibilities:
1. Provides for the effective administration of the group home including program development and personnel, financial and property management including:
- Adherence to the John Howard Society’s mission, core values, and policies and procedures.
- Administering all contractual obligations with the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development.
- Administering duties and obligations regarding open custody requirements of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
- Administering the respective Collective Agreement.
- Provides planning, developing, organizing, directing and maintenance of program activities for the residents to ensure the highest standard of care.
- Ensures sound fiscal management of the group home program including property management.
- Liaises with government departments, other John Howard Society program and services, non-governmental agencies and professional organizations.
- Tracks program efforts, identifies, and leads new opportunities.
- Updating and maintaining policies and procedures for the facility.
2. Provides for effective case management for residents.
- Participates in the design, implementation and supervision of case management services to meet the assessment, individual program planning, evaluation and personal needs of the residents.
- Ensures that a safe and secure environment, is provided through the establishment of effective service care standards.
- Establishes a reporting, monitoring and accountability system for effective case management.
3. Provides staff supervision and support in a unionized environment.
- Provides supervision, direction and support to all group home staff.
- Identifies personnel requirements and scheduling staff as required.
- Screens and hires new staff.
- Provides orientation and training for new employees.
- Provides on-going professional development opportunities, supervision and formal evaluation of staff.
- Conducts regular staff meetings.
- Mentors and motivates staff, identifies personnel performance issues, and undertakes corrective measures when necessary.
4. Provides public relation activities:
- Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive relationship with the residents and family members, the neighborhood, and various individuals and community resources.
- Participates in public education activities to advocate and promote the program as well as other JHS programs and services.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field, preferably a master’s degree.
- Minimum of 3 years’ management/supervisory experience with strong leadership skills.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- Experience in policy development.
- Experience with and a demonstrated understanding of the young offender population and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
- Broad understanding of the criminal justice system.
- Empathic and compassionate.
- Certificates in Emergency First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention & Intervention, and ASIST.
- Person centered and trauma informed approach.
- Ability to be flexible, take initiative, work independently and work collaboratively with a team.
- Excellent oral and written and interpersonal skills.
- Proven competency in computer software.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Multilingual skills and multicultural competence are an asset.
- Certificate of conduct and vulnerable sector check.
Hours of Work:
- 40 hours per week
- Some evenings and weekends maybe required
- On-call rotation may also be required.
